Day 2 - an unforgettable welcome home
Day 2 of our journey through Ukraine was an idyllic one, set against the stunning backdrop of the Carpathian Mountains. The clear rivers, lush green forests, and blue skies lifted everyone’s spirits, and the team was full of energy. Tyler and Nikki tackled the steepest incline of the entire route, sharing laughs with Gennadiy, who rode alongside them. Despite the challenge, the day felt even better than the first, with the team in high spirits as they made their way through the scenic route.
As we passed through small villages, we were met with waves and smiles from the locals, a heartwarming contrast to the reality of having to pass through four military block posts. The streets of the towns were lined with photos and memories of fallen heroes, serving as a stark reminder of the harsh realities this country faces. Ryan’s ride ended just shy of the finish line when he encountered a two-mile-long funeral procession, a sobering moment that highlighted the ongoing struggles of the Ukrainian people. Yet, through it all, the hope and resilience of these communities continue to inspire us.
The end of today’s run was truly unforgettable. All of the Pilgrim Republic children joined Tyler and Nikki for the last mile of their second marathon, followed by a motorcade of leaders from the Chaplains Battalion of Mariupol. Mykulychin locals came out in large numbers to support us, and it was an incredible highlight to be escorted through town by both friends and a local dirt bike club. We are deeply grateful for the support and unity that surrounded us today, and we look forward to continuing this meaningful journey.
